Fundraiser supports Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts
Project co-chairs Mariann Maris, Nancy Warner, Andrea Simpson, Nancy Mack and Pauli Taylorboyd, with assistance from Midwest Airlines, have gathered together some of the volunteers from past Chancellor’s auctions to develop a creative opportunity for UWM to assist individuals affected by Katrina.
The result is the “Decorate a Peace of Cloth Project.” UWM employees, students and alumni are invited to decorate a one-yard piece of muslin that will be sold or auctioned off on Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts on campus. The entry fee is $10. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
The pieces of muslin to be used for the art pieces can be picked up in Engelmann Hall, Room 122, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon or 3 to 5:30 p.m., or by appointment after Sept. 21.
What can you make? Anything, as long as the piece of original cloth with the stamp on it is visible.
You can deliver your completed art piece to the UWM Alumni House, 3230 E. Kenwood Blvd., on Nov. 25 from 9 to 11 a.m., Nov. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, or Nov. 28 from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 is the deadline to submit art pieces. If you want to submit your art earlier, please call Andrea Simpson, 906-4663, to arrange a time.
Anyone wishing to submit their art for judging will be eligible to win two round-trip tickets to any Midwest Airlines destination (some restrictions apply). If you prefer not to submit your piece for judging, simply indicate so on the attached application form.
In a small way, our piece of cloth reflects the peace we wish to bring to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Please try and reflect that community to community spirit in your art.
