College of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Announcement

Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Michael R. Lovell has accepted the position of Dean for the College of Engineering and Applied Science, effective August 1, 2008.

Mike Lovell comes to us from the University of Pittsburgh, where he is the Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Industrial and Bioengineering. A highly productive researcher in the industrial engineering field of tribology (the study of friction and motion of interacting surfaces), Mike oversees several research centers at the University of Pittsburgh, including the Institute for Advanced Energy Studies, the National Science Foundation Center for e-Design, and the Swanson Institute for Technical Excellence. During his tenure as Associate Dean, Pitt's School of Engineering, research expenditures increased more than 63%, from $38M to $62M. He also helped coordinate the construction of a $6.1M nanofabrication facility and is presently in charge of the School's 8-year renovation project.

Mike has the experience, drive, and administrative acumen to lead UWM's College of Engineering and Applied Science in implementing our research growth agenda. From the input I've received from within the University and from community stakeholders, I know that he has the support needed to succeed in his role as Dean, working with faculty, staff, and students to meet the College's strategic goals concerning innovative academic program delivery and development, increased extramural funding, and a high-quality student experience.

Bringing a dean search to a successful conclusion is a highly collaborative task, and the Chancellor and I wish to thank the Chair of the Search Committee, Barb Daley, the members of the Committee, staff support, and all those who attended the candidates' forums for their input during the search process. I also thank Ron Perez, Associate Dean of the College, for ably serving as interim dean.
