Good morning colleagues,
Here are this week's updates from Academic Affairs:
The week:
Monday
-I will meet later today with the leadership team
of the School of Information Studies to discuss the three
dean candidates. Hopefully we will be able to make a
final announcement soon.
-The Reaccreditation Steering Committee meets today.
-The Honors Commencement ceremony is this evening
at 7:30 in the Zelazo Center.
Tuesday
-I will be attending the Academic Staff Committee
meeting.
-I will meet with several faculty and CIE to discuss future
collaboration with Brazil.
Wednesday
-Two committees, the Retention Steering Committee and
Remedial Education Steering Committee, will receive
their charge from me on Wednesday. The Retention
Committee will address strategies to improve our first-
year persistence rate, which is currently 68.5% and our
graduation rate, which is currently 42% in 6 years. The
Remedial Education Committee will define a
comprehensive approach to addressing remedial
education efforts that advance student success in Math
and English.
Thursday
-I will be attending the APBC and Faculty Senate
meetings.
Friday
-There will be a UW System Provosts video conference.
Agenda items include the Learn@UW Executive
Committee: FY 14 operations and initiatives (Chris
Clements); Council of UW Libraries (CUWL): Next
generation library system (Susan Mitchell); Common
Systems Review Group (Bev Kopper); UW-Platteville
Mission Change (Mittie Nimocks den Herder); and the
Gates Funded College Readiness Math MOOC at UW-
La Crosse (Bob Hoar/Heidi McPherson). (Note that the
Emerging Educational Initiatives advisory group is
actively exploring UWM's participation in the La Crosse
Math MOOC.)
Other:
-A new video has been produced by Johnson Controls to
highlight our partnership with their upper management
around the world. The video, which showcases UWM
faculty and students who have participated in UWM-JCI
collaborations, is available at

-The Libraries invite you to a talk by Dean David
Garman, UWM School of Freshwater Sciences, as part
of the UWM’s Academic Adventurers series, held in the
American Geographical Society Library. "Water Around
the World: Myths, Mysteries & Machinations" will be
presented at 3 p.m. on Friday, December 14.
-The Student Success Center seeks nominations from
UWM faculty and staff for the Outstanding Nontraditional
Student Awards. The nomination form will remain open
until January 1, 2013. Honorees will be recognized at an
Outstanding Nontraditional Student Recognition
Reception to be held February 4, 2013. The nomination

-The Center for International Education seeks
applications from UWM faculty who will serve as Global
Studies Research Fellows for the Academic Year
2013/14. Global Studies Research Fellows will teach no
more than one course per semester in order to advance
their research on topics relating to globalization and its
cultural, political, social, economic, and environmental
dimensions. High-quality research proposals on a variety
of interdisciplinary globalization themes are eligible for
funding; strong preference will be given to applicants
focusing on topics related to the Center’s annual
conference theme for April 2014: After Capitalism.
Applicants are invited to address the economic,
environmental, technological, literary, scientific, political,
artistic, and institutional consequences of a world after

-The College of Nursing's Holiday Boutique is being held
on Tuesday, December 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
in Cunningham Hall, Room 795 (7th Floor), featuring
hand-crafted items made by College of Nursing staff,
family, and friends. A portion of the proceeds from each
sale will be used to underwrite the purchase of supplies
for needy children in Kenya. The supplies will be
purchased here and will be transported by our UWM
Nursing Students participating in the Study Abroad
program in Kenya this Winterim. Just in time for holiday
gift giving - a great selection of jewelry, pottery, wearable
art, and more.
-From Global Inclusion and Engagement: We are
currently accepting nominations for the UW System
Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award. One
honoree will be selected from UWM for recognition
during the Wisconsin Women's Studies Conference on
October 19, 2013 at UW-Madison. All women of color
faculty, staff, and students, and active community
members are eligible for this award. For information
about the selection criteria and required nomination

and Urban Studies, who is the recipient of the 2013
AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in
Architectural Education, which is awarded jointly by the
AIA and the Association of Collegiate Schools of
Architecture (ACSA) to an individual who has spent at
least a decade primarily involved in architecture
education and who has made outstanding contributions
to architecture education on the North American

-Johanna Dvorak, Panther Academic Support Services
(PASS) Director, who has been appointed to a national
advisory board for "Gateways to Completion," a new
initiative of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence
in Undergraduate Education. The purpose of the
initiative is to inform institution leaders, faculty, and staff
about the latest promising practices related to gateway
course success including utilizing technology, pre-
enrollment placement and preparation, and curriculum
redesign.
